The Slatted Bed Base

Depending on the kind of bed base you choose, the comfort and the sleeping experience will be different.

So it is above all a question of how firm you like your bed.

We will not steer you toward a sprung bed base any more than toward a slatted one. What matters is knowing what suits you. You are the one who sleeps on it, and you are best placed to know which surface feels comfortable to you.

If you are looking for suppleness and for support that follows your movements at night, the sprung bed base makes more sense. It is the traditional companion of the wool mattress, but a slatted bed base is not incompatible with a wool mattress.

If a firmer, almost hard bed suits you better, a slatted bed base will provide exactly the firmness you are looking for. In that case, the cushioning you feel will come only from the wool’s resilience, not from the box spring’s springs.

The slatted bed base therefore offers, in a way, a more stable bed. In our experience, however, the wool mattress likes movement, and on a surface as static as this it will in the long run need to be remade at more regular intervals.

One last point of vocabulary, to avoid any confusion: a slatted bed base cannot be called a box spring. If it is covered, it is said to be upholstered.

The box spring is always sprung, made according to rules of the craft that time has established. The Le Briand slatted bed base is simply covered: therefore upholstered.

According to the tradition we care about preserving, only a bed base using biconical springs has the privilege of being called a box spring.

A box spring is far more than a simple bed base wrapped in a fabric cover.

Even though the term box spring has gradually been watered down as manufacturers found ways to dress slatted bases up to look like traditional box springs, the real box spring is defined by distinctive features that belong to the bedding maker's craft.

These days there are even bed base manufacturers who attempt a sprung base the industrial way, that is, with simplistic lacing and with padding, border rolls and stuffed edge rolls made of synthetic material.

Yet this other kind of base, which also seeks the label box spring, once again has nothing to do with the traditional box spring.

After this aside on vocabulary, which beyond the duty of naming things correctly allows customers to tell how much work has gone in (and that explains part of the difference in price), discover our slatted bed base.

And above all, do not forget that the choice between the different types of bed base depends first of all on the firmness you need across the whole bed: base + mattress.
