Mattress making is a rare craft. You can discover it in the cité de l’Ameublement, a tiny lane in the industrious 11th arrondissement whose name evokes the manufacturers of the past. Le Briand makes and restores box springs, traditional wool mattresses, armrests, benches and daybeds here.

Everything is handmade and made to measure. The company has been at this address since the 1950s and has been in business since 1880.

That is quite a history! Yet the very small team has a thoroughly modern case to make: its materials—wool, cotton, linen and horsehair—are natural, French and 95% recyclable.
