A wool mattress can last at least 60 years if it is refurbished about ten times; when the ticking is replaced, most of the wool is reused after carding.

The mattress can then be built on stretched ticking by spreading out the prepared fiber and patting it down to make sure its springiness—its “airiness”—is even throughout. Only virgin wool, meaning wool shorn from a living animal, has the required elasticity;

Once the ticking has been folded over, the tufts and edge rolls are sewn by hand. The amount of filling determines how soft or firm the mattress feels.
